A new work from my Tour of China series. This small village in southern China had to build a lake to help overcome fierce fires and bad luck. It was recommended by a Feng Shui expert. Seems to work, as the village was now calm and peaceful.

I am on holidays at the moment, and this is a 'plein air' sketch of the ski resort where we are staying. It is beginning to thaw in the warm spring weather, but there is still a lot of snow. This "Summit" run is for beginners, as it is wide and not too steep. Other runs are much steeper, as the resort is on the top of the mountain, and there is only one way to go... down!

Cadel and Mark: Le Tour de France

Another sketch of my favourite sport: bike riding.

Aussie Cadel Evans and Manx Mark Cavendish are winners of Le Tour this year.

This impression catches their relaxed friendship on the final stage. Cadel knows that he is the winner of yellow (fastest time), but Mark will still be challenged for the points classification (highest points won by sprinting.)

Two years ago I went skiing in the worst weather. The sun was low, the wind was wild. The dark clouds were closing in. I took a snap as I was going up on the T-Bar, just as this crazy skier came flying over the rise, with the wind at her back.

Three Barrels

This building was used for grain distribution to the local villagers. Our visit caused much amusement. I was so impressed with the colours and the light that I took many pictures, and have been sketching and painting the scene ever since. This small sketch will be a large oil painting soon, I hope. :)

Winter in this Chinese village was so peaceful. Almost no tourists, and the weather was calm. This boat was moving slowly on the water. It barely made a ripple. I have tried to make the water softer and more wet in this painting.

My trip to China showed me how many daily tasks were undertaken with such simple equipment: a bike. No fancy Transit vans for this simple job. Bikes were used for work and transport. An affordable necessity. And such a contrast to the bike used for sport and enjoyment in France and other wealthier countries, like my own, Australia.

This classic view of Venice is based on one of my photographs: I had my paints with me, but it was so cold I was unable to take off my gloves to paint. So here is the result from the warmth of my studio.

Bikes are popular in Italy. This scene was in Florence.

The woman was stopped, off her bike, and intently

listening to her caller. A minute of life.

Watercolors are now my preferred method for 'cartooning'. I can

easily work on composition and colour, making changes until

I am happy to start with the oils.

Therefore these paintings are sometimes quite sketchy and spontaneous.

This work is typical!

The Long Lane

My trip to China produced many images that I'd like to paint. These humble village scenes were most memorable. The geese were curious, not afraid at all. They had ponds to swim in, and were fed scraps from the village kitchens. Totally 'free range'!

Of all the places I visited in China, Yellow Mountain was the most magical.
It was named "Yellow" after the Yellow Emperor, and I can imagine the royalty
visiting there for their summer holidays. My holiday was in the heart of winter,
a tad cold, but no crowds. I recommend every traveller to visit and stay at least
one night at the top.

This painting was of one of the many bridges on the road that winds
around the mountain, allowing for magnificent views... as long as
there is no cloud... we had cloud, and snow.

But still, the trees through the mist were beautiful.

I 'borrowed' these flowers ... not stealing as such, as there were hundreds on the shrub, and many were hanging over the fence and laying on the path, ready to be trodden on. I looked for the owner, but it was at dusk, and she was not in sight... so I pinched a couple!

I've been putting off painting these flowers. I was hesitant they'd make a good painting, especially after the delicate, intricate Dianthus. These are so big and bold by comparison, and need quick and strong brush strokes to match. Different to the others, but I'm happy with the result.

I have three very large gum trees in my garden, and they have the most delicate blossoms on them. Usually they are too high to be appreciated. But this week a strong wind dislodged a branch, and enabled me to see them up close... and paint them.

These flowers seem to dance with their skirts flung high. This small plant is another new addition. I'm hoping it will grow quite big. I enjoyed painting the flowers, foliage too, with the pink stems.

This flower grows on a small shrub in my garden. It attracts rozellas and lorikeets.

And the shrub is always in flower... 12 months of the year.

It has very delicate parts, which I knew would be hard to paint. So this is more impressionistic than realistic.

I visited our local plant nursery today to buy some potted flowers for this new project. I ended up over spending... I bought 18 plants!! (Having my husband there has given me someone to blame!) Although I am painting most days, I have neglected my 'daily painting' exercise. So, I am making amends, and here is the first in a new series of regular small works. I live in Sydney, and the harbour is a such a rich visual experience. It is huge, and it constantly surprises one as it appears around every corner. This wharf is in a small suburb named Pyrmont.

We have a fabulous pub in Sydney called The Arthouse Hotel. It is a beautiful old building, recently renovated. Every Monday night the upstairs is turned into a Life Drawing session. From 6pm to 8.30, two models are supplied for the patrons to draw... and draw we do! It only costs $3, and we buy drinks and dinner from the bar. This is Sammy, an Adonis if ever there was one.

A painterly view of the valley behind our holiday lodge. I love the wind blown grasses, with the snow behind, and the purple sky. I think it could be a start to a series of abstract paintings. Maybe in another life!

Sketch Club

Spent Sunday afternoon at Julian Ashton's sketch club at The Rocks in Sydney. A beautiful model, and only four other artists. Looking at these sketches, there are a few weird bumps and lumps, but I'm so out of practice... If I can find the time I will keep going. It is such a good discipline, much like the daily paintings (which I must admit have been absent for a week of so.) Maybe tonight.

My son has just moved into his first home (about time... he's 25 and three quarters!) and he asked for a painting of the surf for a large white wall in his living area. So this is the painting. It was fun painting with a big brush. I found that liquin medium was perfect for the 'flow' that I wanted.
Its my first seascape, and I'm not sure that I'm finished yet. But it was a lot of fun!

I'm really enjoying painting fruit at the moment. When I go to the fruit shop, I'm surrounded by potential paintings. And I have to have two of each: one to paint and one to eat... until the painting is finished, then its two to eat!
